

You walk onto a floor that was cleaned last night, or where a fit-out just wrapped, and something in the air just smells off. It doesn’t seem dangerous -- just not quite right. That smell has a name: volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
The air smells “off” after cleaning, a furniture delivery, a fresh coat of paint, or a renovation. Sometimes tenants mention it. More often, they just quietly notice it and move on.
VOCs are chemicals that off-gas from materials and products: cleaning agents, adhesives, new furnishings, paints, finishes. After any of these enter a space, VOC levels can build up in the air, especially if ventilation isn't adjusted to clear them.
In the short term, VOC exposure is associated with headaches and eye and throat irritation, exactly the vague, hard-to-pin-down complaints that are easy to dismiss. The longer-term concern is sustained, low-level exposure that nobody's really tracking. Because the symptoms are mild and the cause is invisible, VOCs are some of the most under-reported air quality issues in any building. People assume the smell is normal, or that it'll fade, and never connect it to that mid-morning headache.
VOC data turns a vague nuisance into something you can manage precisely:
Spot the spikes that follow cleaning, deliveries, or fit-outs, so you know exactly when air quality dipped and why.
Ventilate when it matters, clearing the air after a known event, rather than running ventilation hard around the clock and wasting energy.
Catch the slow build-up of low-level exposure that tenants would never think to flag.
The pattern with VOCs is almost always tied to an event: something happened, and the air responded. Once you can see that pattern, you can get ahead of it. Schedule the deep clean for a Friday evening, ramp ventilation overnight, and hand tenants a fresh space on Monday instead of a faint chemical haze.
